The dunk tank and friends

Dunk tanks are usually booked for fetes and fundraisers β€” pair them with a couple of other carnival games and you've got a full sideshow alley.

Dunk tank hire β€” your questions answered

What's included with dunk tank hire?

  • 2.5m dunk booth with reinforced seat and trapdoor mechanism
  • Throw target with the trigger arm β€” three balls per throw
  • Full water tank β€” we fill it on arrival, drain it on pack-down
  • Ground sheet for the splash zone
  • Setup, fill and pack-down by our team
  • $20m public liability insurance on every booking

You provide: the volunteer in the seat, a tap for filling (we bring the hose), and a 4 Γ— 4m clear space.

How much does dunk tank hire cost?

  • $350 β€” 4-hour hire (most fetes and fundraisers)
  • $395 β€” 7-hour hire (full-day events)
  • $450 β€” overnight hire
  • $495 β€” weekend hire (Friday afternoon to Sunday)

Delivery is additional β€” $95 in inner Brisbane, more for outer areas. Check delivery for your postcode.

How does the dunk tank actually work?

The volunteer sits on a hinged seat about 1.2m above the water tank. A small target is mounted on a lever next to the booth. When a thrown ball hits the target, the lever trips and the seat drops β€” sending the volunteer straight into the water. They climb back up via the side rail, reset the seat, and wait for the next throw.

It's not technically complicated. The whole thing runs itself once the volunteer is briefed.

Who hires dunk tanks in Brisbane?

  • School fetes and P&C fundraisers β€” by far the most-booked. Principal, deputy and the most-disliked teacher all rotate through the seat. $2 a throw raises serious money in an afternoon.
  • Charity fundraisers β€” local councillors, sports club presidents, business owners. Nothing pulls a crowd like watching a person in a suit hit the water.
  • Corporate family days β€” the CEO in the seat is a guaranteed photo for the staff newsletter.
  • End-of-season sports nights β€” coach takes the seat, players take the throws.
  • End-of-year school events β€” Year 6 leavers' day, Year 12 muck-up day.
  • Birthday parties β€” less common, but works well for 10th–13th birthdays where the birthday kid wants to dunk Dad.

Is the dunk tank safe?

Yes β€” when used as designed. Rules:

  • Volunteer must be 5 years and older, no maximum age but should be comfortable with falling 1.2m into water
  • Sober volunteer, no alcohol before sitting on the seat
  • Volunteer briefed on how to fall (sit upright, hands in lap, don't grab the seat on the way down)
  • Throwers stand at the marked line β€” 3m from the target
  • Tennis-ball-sized soft balls only (we supply); no hard objects
  • Spectators stand back from the splash zone
  • Operator stops the booth in any unsafe weather (storm, lightning)

For school fetes, P&C insurance usually covers the dunk tank as long as it's set up by a hire company (us) and supervised by an adult during use. For council parks, our $20m public liability covers the equipment β€” yours covers the volunteers.

How much space do I need?

Minimum 4 Γ— 4m of clear space. The booth itself is 2 Γ— 2m but you need clearance for the splash zone, the throw line (3m back from the target), and people to walk around it.

Set it up on grass or hardstand. The water can spill out a bit during use β€” don't put it next to your good lawn or anywhere with electrical equipment.

Do I need a water source?

Yes β€” a standard garden tap within 25m of the setup. We bring the hose. Filling takes about 20 minutes; we'll usually do it on arrival before the event starts. At pack-down, we drain the tank back onto the grass or into a stormwater drain (depending on your venue).

How do you raise the most money with a dunk tank?

Notes from running these at fetes for over a decade:

  • Charge $2 for three throws, not $1 for one. People throw three times either way; price for the natural behaviour.
  • Roster volunteers in 30-minute shifts β€” keeps the energy up and lets you cycle through teachers, parents and local "celebrities".
  • Schedule the principal for the busiest hour β€” usually 1pm to 2pm at a Saturday fete. Advertise it ahead of time.
  • Have a microphone. A volunteer announcer calling out who's in the seat ("It's Mr Patterson, Year 4 β€” three throws for $2!") triples the queue.
  • Cash-only or QR code β€” no eftpos at the booth. Set up a cash float of $50 in $1 and $2 coins.
  • Take photos of the dunks β€” sell them digitally in the school newsletter the next week as a follow-up fundraiser.

A well-run dunk tank at a primary school fete typically raises $400–$800 in a 4-hour shift. We've seen $1,200+ at bigger events.

Can I bundle the dunk tank with other gear?

Common combos for fundraising events:

  • Dunk tank + 3 jumping castles + fun food machines β€” the full fete package. Get a tailored fete quote.
  • Dunk tank + obstacle course + bouncy boxing β€” sports-club end-of-season night.
  • Dunk tank + photo pod β€” corporate family day, sells the "best dunk" photos to staff afterwards.

What areas do you deliver to?

Greater Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Standard delivery from $95 in inner Brisbane. Check delivery to your postcode.
